A Pottery Tour

The area around Cleveland is home to Mississippi’s best pottery houses, and they’re so easy to get to! Both are located just north of Cleveland on historic Highway 61. The first place is McCarty Pottery and Gardens in Merigold where you can browse pottery and have lunch in their beautiful, Asian inspired gardens. And just a little further up the road, in historic Mound Bayou, is Peter’s Pottery, one of the south’s fastest up-and-coming pottery houses. The Baby Doll House

The Baby Doll House

One of the prettiest and one of the few surviving antebellum homes in this part of the delta, The Baby Doll House was the location of the 1956 movie, Baby Doll, based on a Tennessee Williams story. You can check the website to see when it’s open to the public, but it’s a nice place to just drive to and photograph, too. Be sure and watch the movie before you come. It was a good one…nominated for four academy awards. And, if you’re planning a southern wedding or renewing your vows in Mississippi, is there really a prettier place?

A Sunset Picnic at Terrene Landing

A Sunset Picnic at Terrene Landing

If you don’t know it, the Mississippi Delta is one of the best places to see a sunset. There’s something about alluvial planes that make them a grand repository for light and one of the best places to see an otherworldly sunset. Situated on a low bluff on the Mississippi River in nearby Rosedale, with a view of the opposite bank unspoiled by buildings, this is a great place to bring a picnic and watch the boats steam by and listen to nature. With few lights around, the landing is great for stargazing as well. Don’t want to pack a picnic yourself, there are several places in Cleveland that will pack one up for you. Check out our dining section for more info.
