A Taste of Cleveland: Leña Featured on MPB’s Southern Dish

Mississippi Public Broadcasting (MPB) will premiere the first season of its new original series, Southern Dish, on April 2. The series explores the people and traditions behind Mississippi’s most celebrated expression of culture – food.

“Southern Dish” premieres six episodes this spring, with more to come. From fine dining establishments to historic landmarks, the series celebrates the dishes we grew up with and the ideas shaping the kitchens of today.

“We are bringing the viewers behind the scenes to see chefs at work in their artistry and to hear what inspires their creativity in the kitchen,” said Royal Aills. “In Mississippi, so much of who we are is built around food and storytelling. Like we say at the end of each episode, every dish tells a story.”

Lydia Chassaniol, restaurateur and host of “Southern Dish,” said, “In Mississippi, food is more than what we eat. It’s who we are. It’s how we say hello to new friends, welcome new people to our families, celebrate our happiest moments and even how we say goodbye to the ones we love.”

The series highlights iconic destinations from the Mississippi Delta to the Gulf Coast, including restaurants recognized by the Michelin Guide and chefs who are finalists for the James Beard Award for Best Chef: South.

One Delta stop viewers can look forward to is Cleveland’s own Leña Pizza + Bagel, which will be featured in the May 7 episode with appearances by Marisol and Rory Doyle. Located in downtown Cleveland, Leña has quickly become a local favorite known for its handmade bagels, wood-fired pizzas, and creative takes on classic comfort foods. The restaurant highlights fresh ingredients and a welcoming atmosphere that reflects the community spirit and growing food scene of the Mississippi Delta.

The first season will air on MPB Television Thursdays at 7 p.m., beginning April 2 and concluding May 7. Episodes will also be available on demand through the PBS App on smart TVs and streaming devices, as well as online at mpbonline.org.
