Grammy Museum Mississippi
The Grammy Museum Mississippi (the only one outside of Los Angeles) is a fantastic place to spend a couple of hours. Not only will you learn about the music industry, you’ll be able to see the outfits of many of your favorite musicians while learning more about the star-making quality of the music industry and the important contributions Mississippi has made to America’s music.
Catch a Show at the Bologna Performing Arts Center
Also known as the BPAC, the Bologna Performing Arts Center, located just a few blocks from downtown, brings regular nationally touring concerts and performances to the Delta Region. In the past year this modern and attractive venue has brought in Martina McBride, Dionne Warwick, Don Felder, Chloe Agnew and a host of others. Get a Massage!
After a long day of shopping, you’ll be due for a massage. The WAE Clinic, a whole-health clinic here in Cleveland offers massage as one of their myriad services. You can get your massage at the clinic, or arrange a private massage through your hotel if you’re staying at the Lyric or Cotton House.
Deep Roots Concerts Downtown
Held at the historic Ellis Theater in downtown Cleveland, Deep Roots hosts a monthly, sometimes weekly music series featuring Americana music. Americana can be anything from blues to jazz to country. This is a BYOB event, so you can bring a bottle of wine and kick back and listen to some of what makes American music the best music in the world.
McCarty Pottery
A trip to the delta would not be complete without a trip up to McCarty Pottery in Merigold. You’ll make all of your friends so jealous when they see your instagram post about the perfect piece you found. Or you’ll make someone very happy if you’re buying it for a gift.
Peter’s Pottery
And just up the road from McCarty is Peter’s Pottery in historic Mound Bayou. Peter’s Pottery has become another “must-visit” stop for pottery lovers and others who just enjoy quality stuff. Their earth tone pieces have begun to attract collectors from all over.
The Baby Doll House
One of the prettiest and one of the few surviving antebellum homes in this part of the delta, The Baby Doll House was the location of the 1956 movie, Baby Doll, based on a Tennessee Williams story. You can check the website to see when it’s open to the public, but it’s a nice place to just drive to and photograph, too. Be sure and watch the movie before you come. It was a good one…nominated for four academy awards.
Dockery Farms
People who know music know that what we know as blues music started right outside of Cleveland at Dockery Farms. Back in the day, Mr. Dockery was one of the few plantation owners that allowed music to be played on the weekends and so blues music began to be refined and sprung up around the gin. You and your friends can join people from around the world in learning the history of the place, while taking some excellent photos, on a self-guided tour. There’s no entry fee, but donations are accepted.
“Delta Escape” Escape Rooms
If you’re looking for a fun activity to do with your friends, Delta Escape, located in downtown Cleveland, offers Mississippi Delta-themed escape rooms. They’re normally open on Fridays and Saturdays but will also open throughout the week on appointment.
Drinks at Bar Fontaine
After a full day of shopping and learning about music and pottery and just enjoying the Mississippi Delta, it may be time to unwind. A great place to do so is at Bar Fontaine, one of the best rooftop bars in Mississippi located on top of the Cotton House in downtown Cleveland. They have a great wine selection, bespoke cocktails, small plates and friendly service…and some of the best views of the horizon in the delta.
